Anabolic Steroids Effects of Anabolic Steroids

Steroids are very effective drugs, and in many cases are life-saving. Side effects are common, but are generally worth tolerating, especially commacksportsfitness given the potential benefits of their use. If you put on weight while you’re on hormone therapy, this can also lead to larger breasts.

• If you normally wear contact lenses, you might need to avoid wearing these while having treatment with steroid eye drops.
• Steroids obtained from a gym or dealer may be produced for use on animals, could be fake or may have been labelled incorrectly.
• You might not be able to start steroids if you have an infection, or if you have any wounds on your body, as steroids might delay these getting better or cover up some of your symptoms.
• But there’s no evidence that these work, and it’s important to check with your doctor that these are safe for you.
• It may be that they can reassure you, or again, suggest changes that you find helpful.

We’ll monitor them closely throughout treatment to reduce the chance of these happening. These are understandable feelings, but many studies have shown that maintenance therapy (continuing to take medication even when you are well) is important and does reduce the chance of a flare-up. It can also mean that you are less likely to need to move on to taking additional or stronger drugs.

How might hormone therapy make me feel?

Some people with ME/CFS also experience pain symptoms in joints or muscles along with headaches. When someone has this pattern of symptoms, it is important that tests are done to check for underlying conditions that could be causing them. For some people that will just be bloods tests done by their GP. For other people, it may involve referrals to hospital for specialist opinions or investigations.

• Some people find they become fatigued when they’re withdrawn from steroids.
• Steroids suppress the immune system and reduce inflammation around the site of nerve damage.
• If you feel unwell or need advice, you can call them at any time of the day or night.
• Some people taking sulphasalazine may need a folic acid supplement.
• So, if you have UC or Crohn’s Colitis your doctor may advise you to continue to take a 5-ASA indefinitely.

If you feel feverish or unwell, or develop any new symptoms after starting steroids, it’s important to tell your doctor or rheumatology nurse. Steroids might affect some medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart or blood pressure problems, or mental health issues. If you have any of these conditions, the person treating you will need to make sure the steroids aren’t making the condition worse. If you’ve been taking steroid tablets for more than a few days, you usually need to reduce your dose gradually.

I just sort of, I think, wakened up one morning and could hardly get out of bed. But as I say, it was straight on to steroids, which I’m very grateful for. Steroids work best if you begin taking them as soon as possible after the start of your relapse. The NICE MS Guideline recommends that you begin taking steroids within 14 days of the start of your relapse.

It’s important to seek medical advice before stopping or making any changes to your medication. Usually, you need to stop taking them gradually in order to reduce the risk of adrenal crisis, which can be serious. Steroids can increase your blood pressure (hypertension), which can lead to headaches and dizziness. You should have regular blood pressure checks while you are taking steroids – ask your medical team for advice.

Can you have a beer on steroids?

If you take oestrogen tablets, you may also get breast swelling. Most men taking a high dose of the anti-androgen bicalutamide for more than six months will get breast swelling. There are medicines that may help relieve the symptoms of hot flushes and reduce how often you get them.

Safety precautions while you are taking steroids

Steroids can make you feel hungrier than usual and you may gain weight. Your appetite should go back to normal when you stop taking steroids. If you are worried about gaining weight, talk to your doctor or nurse.

Treatment for other conditions

We’ll arrange for a blood test to check your child’s antibodies to chicken pox and your child may need an injection to protect them, but your doctor or nurse will talk through this with you. You should have this card if you are dependant on daily steroid use. This means your body has problems making enough of a hormone called cortisol. Having this problem can affect your body’s ability to cope with stress.
